Jewelry Cleaning & Maintenance
Jewelry Care
Daily Wear
- Every Madduck piece is thoughtfully designed and finely made to deliver lasting beauty and everyday confidence.
- Minor scratches may occur over time but do not affect durability.
- Contact with water, lotions, or perfumes will not cause tarnishing or discoloration, though shine may slightly reduce; regular wiping is recommended.
Why Silver Tarnishes & How to Fix It
Genuine silver can naturally tarnish or darken when it reacts with sulfur in the air and sweat (forming silver sulfide) — this is normal for silver jewelry in general.
But Madduck pieces are plated with a layer of rhodium, which helps resist tarnish and darkening far better than bare silver. If the finish does dull over time, here's how to fix it:
- Wipe with a soft cloth or a silver polishing cloth to restore the shine
- Clean using the method below
- If the plating starts to wear, send it in for re-polishing/re-plating (free the first time, then 350 THB per piece) to bring back the like-new white shine
- Store in a zip-lock bag or box, away from moisture, to slow tarnishing
Avoid
- Wearing while showering or doing heavy household chores (e.g., washing clothes or dishes).
- Such activities may cause build-up (sweat, dust, skincare residue, soap, food particles), making stones appear dull and leaving scratches on metal.
- Avoid strong impacts. While stones are securely set using professional jewelry techniques (not glued), heavy impact may still dislodge stones.
- Frequent exposure to hand sanitizer or alcohol may slightly reduce shine; if it fades, you may send the piece for one complimentary rhodium replating under warranty.
- Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools or the ocean; remove when not in use.
Storage
- Wipe with a soft cloth to remove sweat and dirt.
- Place in a zip-lock bag to prevent moisture.
- Store the sealed bag inside a jewelry box.
A complimentary zip-lock bag is included with every order.
Cleaning Method
- Soak in warm water with mild dish soap for 5–10 minutes.
- Brush gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush; avoid harsh scrubbing.
- Rinse with clean water.
- Pat dry with a soft cloth and finish with a warm hair dryer.
Caring for Genuine Gemstones
Genuine gemstones such as amethyst, citrine, topaz, garnet, and peridot can be softer or more sensitive to heat and chemicals than CZ, Moissanite, and Lab-Grown Diamond (which are harder and more durable, and can be cleaned with the method above), so they need extra-gentle care.
- Avoid soaking or hard brushing as in the cleaning method above — use a soft cloth dampened with plain water to wipe gently instead
- Avoid heat and strong sunlight, as some gemstones' colors can fade
- Avoid chemicals, perfume, and cleaning agents
- Remove before high-impact activities
- Store separately so they don't rub against other jewelry, as some gemstones scratch easily
